Percy's Bio

ABOUT PERCY THORNTON
Percy began dancing as a teenager and started teaching ballroom at the age of 17.  He competed at all levels in ballrrom as an instructor and worked with the famous Pierre DuLane in New York.

During the mid '70s Percy began to compete in shag dancing and quickly achieved "Pro" status.  To continue promoting and sharing his love for dancing, Percy began to teach all ages in many communities including NC State and Campbell Universities.  He also was involved with helping people through drug/alcohol rehabilitation by teaching at Holly Hill.

Several years ago Percy had a servious medical set back and was no longer able to share his love for 'the dance' through teaching and participation.  As his medical needs continued to mount and his source of income dwindled, those of us who love and appreciate him decided to hold an event to generate funds and assist with his medical needs.

In May 2007 Moore Area Shag Society & Mint Juleo's Club in Southern Pines, NC sponsored a benefit for Percy.  This event was so well received that the organizers Jo and Gary Garber decided to start a foundation to help more individuals.  The result is now the Percy Thornton Foundation for the Preservation of the Dance.  A non-profit charitable foundation in North Carolina.

Percy passed away in 2010 after a very long battle with a congenital heart condition.  He will be forever reveared as a dedicated and giving dance instructior.  It has been said that, "Percy taught just about everyone in North Carolina to shag dance". for that gift we are forever grateful!  THANK YOU PERCY - YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!
